A Dog Day Afternoon

While my fellow #3daytweeps were out doing Virtual Training Walks together I was trying to coerce myself to get out of bed. It worked, but I only got as far as the sofa. It’s just too darn hot out there, folks.

In order to keep my day from turning into an HGTV sofa marathon I made an appointment for Milo with Dr Penny. He was none too happy about it. To help him retain what little dignity he has left I didn’t take any pictures of our visit, but he got an A+, a rabies shot, and a whole lot of love and treats from the staff at Central Veterinary Hospital. My wallet, however, did not feel the love. Rather, it felt the heartbreak that often follows love and will undoubtedly be limping along until payday.

After an uneventful trip to Agrifeed, where we ran into a few greyhounds looking for homes and did a little more entirely necessary damage to my wallet (a dog’s got to eat, you know!) we went down to the Third Creek Greenway. I’ve driven by a million times, but never given it a shot. The first quarter mile is completely lacking in shade, but it’s absolutely gorgeous. The no-mow-zone, lack of street noise, abundance of birds, and thick expanse of trees took me far away from the heart of Bearden. It wasn’t long before we reached a fork where we were given the option of going to Tyson Park or heading into Bearden. The latter route looked like it had more shade. Allow yourself a minute to take in the scenery.

Don’t get lost in it though, before you get ahead of yourself you’ll want to pay attention to this sign:

Third Creek Warning

Glad to see we’re still in Knoxville. Sorry, Milo, can’t cool off here. We continued on down the path until we reached a crosswalk where we turned around partly because I was hoping Josh would call about lunch soon and I didn’t want to be too far from the car, but also because I thought I might die of a heat stroke.

The shade was a welcome relief, as were these gorgeous flowers that I’d like to some day have growing all over my yard.

Lily?

Somewhat comically, the only two pictures I took of Milo on our walk ended up being blurry in one way or another. In the one where he’s walking, his face is clear but the rest of him isn’t; in the stopped and sitting picture everything’s clear with the exception of his head. How’s that for dog photography talent?

So we only made it one mile, but it’s hot and I was wearing a dress and sandals, so it wasn’t really well planned. Better than not walking, right? For the record, when I say hot, I mean it was so hot that Milo couldn’t stand still on the pavement in the parking lot without burning his feet. Let’s just say his hot feet dance looks a lot like a little kid doing the potty dance.

Finally, here’s my happy, tired dog on the patio at Stir Fry Cafe after three hours of heat and errands.
